HOW TO CALCULATE KNUST CWA

This write-up details the grading system and the Cumulative Weighted Average (C.W.A.) used at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Grading is a standardized approach to evaluating different levels of achievement in a course. This system assigns grades in various formats such as letters (A through F), ranges (1 to 6), percentages, or numerical scores out of a possible total (e.g., out of 100).

The Weighted Average (WA) system employed by Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) calculates grades based on marks obtained in assessments, usually marked out of 100%. The credit hours assigned to each course by the academic body of the university are also factored in as weights for the computation. The credit hours associated with each course are also taken into account by the system when determining the average used to classify students' performance. To gain a better understanding of this process, please continue reading this article.

KNUST adopts a grading system termed the Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA). Starting from the first semester every student has a CWA of 100.00. After being tested in a series of examinations, mid-semester, workshops, reports, quizzes, assignments, projects, and field-work, the weighted average grading system is used to determine the cumulative grading average of each student at the end of the semester; as well as the class of degree each student will graduate with at the end of their full course. In KNUST, the examination takes 70 per cent, and the remaining 30per cent is shared between practical assignments, group works, research, attendance, mid-semester examination, and other things which are based on the course and the lecturer’s discretion in the assessment.

Grade Scale                                       Range Comments

A  80.00 – 100.0                                  Outstanding

A 75.00 – 79.99                                 Excellent

B 65.00 – 74.99                                  Very Good

C 60.00 – 64.99                                  Good

D 50.00 – 59.99                                  Credit

Steps To Calculate CWA

Step 1: Multiply the percentage mark scored in each course by the course credit to obtain the Weighted Marks.

Step 2: Add up all the Weighted Marks calculated up to the end of the semester in question to obtain the Cumulative Weighted Marks.

Step 3: Add all the corresponding Course Credits to the end of the semester in question to obtain the Cumulative Credits.

Step 4: Divide the Cumulative Weighted Marks by the Cumulative Credits to obtain your Cumulative Weighted Average for the semester in question.

SAMPLE COURSES WITH THEIR CREDIT HOURS Multiplied by EXAM PERCENTAGE (From Table A)

Course No.      Credit (Hrs)          Marks (%)

DST 153                     2                           134

CSM 163                    2                            168

CSM 151                    3                            189

CSM 157                    2                            160

                                                        Total: 1417

After the calculations have been done, the student’s total would be divided by 20 (Total Credit Hour or Unit).

To get your CWA:

Cumulative Weighted Marks should be divided by the credit hour CWM/Credit Hour, Which is: 1417/20= 70.85

CWA= 70.85

KNUST has a strict policy where students who fail more than four courses in a semester will be required to withdraw from the university. Additionally, if a student completes their academic year but still needs to retake some courses, they must pass those courses before they can receive their certificate. This may require an extra semester or year of study, as the case may be. The KNUST grading system is rigorous, and students who aspire to excel at this prestigious university must be hardworking and diligent. The university places a high value on excellence, and it is considered the hallmark of KNUST.
