FORMER FISHERIES MINISTER, SHERRY AYITTEY PASSES ON AT AGE 75

At the age of 75, Hon. Hanny Sherry Ayittey, the Former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, has passed away. Her family conveyed this sad news through a brief statement. The head of the family, Nii Kofi Ayittey of Akwetey Nantan, Osu Alata, announced the demise of their beloved daughter and sister on July 22, 2023. Further details will be shared by the family in due course, according to a statement signed by Nii Kofi Ayittey.

Madam Sherry Ayittey, who was born in 1948, pursued her secondary education at Labone Secondary School in Accra, and she belonged to the 1965-67 year group. After completing her secondary education, she went on to excel academically, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Master of Science in Industrial Microbiology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which was previously known as the University of Science and Technology (UST) in Kumasi.

Her professional journey saw her serve as the managing director of Ghana Industrial Holding Corporation (GIHOC) Distilleries. Additionally, Madam Ayittey contributed her expertise to various management boards in Ghana, notably including the Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation, which is now known as Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Ghana Forestry Commission, and the Ghana Export Promotion Council. Throughout her career, she made significant contributions to the development and progress of various sectors in the country.

Madam Sherry Ayittey played a crucial role in Ghana's international engagements, leading the country's delegation to the Conference of Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, and the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity. Her leadership during these conferences contributed to the formation of the historic Paris Climate Agreement.


Beyond her international involvement, she was also a prominent figure in Ghana's political landscape. As a founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), she actively participated in various roles within the party and government. Her contributions spanned from being a women's activist to holding positions as a minister of state and a National Vice-chairperson.


Following the 2008 presidential election, President John Atta Mills appointed Madam Ayittey as the Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology in his government, beginning in January 2009. In this capacity, she furthered her dedication to environmental and scientific issues while serving the nation.

In January 2013, President John Dramani Mahama appointed Madam Sherry Ayittey as the Minister for Health, succeeding Alban Bagbin in that role. She took on the responsibilities of overseeing the nation's healthcare sector during her tenure.

However, on 9 June 2014, President Mahama made a decision to reassign her to a different ministry. Madam Ayittey was reassigned to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, where she assumed a new set of responsibilities relating to the development and management of Ghana's fisheries and aquaculture industry.
