MINISTER'S MAIDS STEAL $1M, €300K AND OTHER VALUABLES

The trial of the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah's maids, along with three other accomplices, is currently underway in an Accra Circuit Court. The accused individuals, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old unemployed Sarah Adjei are facing serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a crime and multiple counts of stealing, involving substantial amounts of money.

The case came to light in June 2023 when the complainants reported the theft of cash and various personal belongings, including clothing, perfumes, and jewellery. Patience, who worked as a house help for the complainants, was caught entering their bedroom using a duplicate key before the theft occurred.


The stolen items, which include monetary assets, valuable clothes, handbags, perfumes, and jewellery belonging to Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, had a shocking total value of GH¢95,000 and US$95,000.

In addition to the theft from Madam Cecilia, Patience is also accused of stealing cultural treasures, including six pieces of Kente cloth worth GH¢90,000 and six sets of men's suits valued at US$3,000, which belonged to the minister's husband.

The case has become more complex with the involvement of three additional individuals who have been charged in connection with the thefts.


The accused allegedly used the stolen funds to finance various properties and purchases, such as renting a 3-bedroom apartment and a store in Tamale, purchasing vehicles, and funding other personal expenses.


The court has adjourned the case to August 2, 2023, to allow for ongoing investigations.


It is important to clarify that all the stolen money belongs to the minister and not her husband.

a. GH¢95,000 worth of clothes

b. US$35,000 worth of handbags

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation, has however resigned following the revelation that she had over $1 million casually lying about her residence. The Minister reportedly made the announcement of her resignation in a letter dated Saturday, July 22, 2023, addressed to the President in light of the scandal surrounding her which the President as accepted.
