STATE OF THE KNUST SRC ADDRESS 2024

The first-ever female SRC President of KNUST, Her Excellency Yvonne Osei Adobea, delivered the State of the SRC Address (SOSA) on March 17, 2024, amidst notable challenges faced by the administration. The budget presentation for the 2023/2024 academic year sparked public discourse, as members of the SRC Parliamentary Council expressed dissent. However, the SOSA served as a platform to update students on the SRC's current state, achievements, challenges, and plans for the future.

KNUST SoSA 2024

Empowering Students and Building Capacity:

Her Excellency's address highlighted the proactive steps taken by the SRC to empower students and enhance their academic experience. Coordination efforts led by the SRC Vice President, Nana Kwabena, ensured the smooth organization of classes under the trail support scheme and facilitated the seamless arrival of first-year students. Additionally, collaborations with university offices facilitated a welcoming environment for students, aiding in their transition to campus life.

Furthermore, the SRC has leveraged retained funds from previous administrations to support capacity-building programs and initiatives. Programs organized under the financial secretary, general secretary, and women's commissioner have streamlined operations and provided valuable resources to students. Initiatives such as the Scholarship Sync have equipped students with information on available opportunities, ensuring greater accessibility to academic aid.

Innovative Solutions to Address Student Needs:

The SOSA also highlighted innovative solutions proposed by the SRC to address pressing student needs. The introduction of an E-counselling app aims to provide accessible mental health support to students facing academic stress, social pressures, and other challenges. This online platform promises to offer counseling services from licensed professionals, catering to students' needs regardless of location or mobility barriers.

Additionally, the SRC has recognized the importance of meeting basic needs such as food and clothing for student well-being. Despite challenges in the current food and clothing bank policies, efforts are underway to reform these systems and increase support to students. The SRC's commitment to addressing food and clothing insecurity among students underscores its dedication to enhancing the overall student experience.

Expansion of KBN and Financial Assistance:

A notable aspect highlighted in the SOSA was the need for the expansion of the SRC's KBN (KNUST Benevolence Fund). Despite its noble intentions, the current status of the fund reveals limitations in its coverage and effectiveness in addressing the diverse financial needs of KNUST students. To address this, Her Excellency inaugurated a 5-member Ad-hoc Committee to formulate a policy document aimed at expanding the fund's reach while maintaining the quality of assistance provided. The proposed solution aims to increase the number of beneficiaries while ensuring a substantial allocation per person, reflecting the SRC's commitment to equitable access to higher education.

Championing Transparency and Accountability:

Amidst allegations and challenges, the SRC remains steadfast in championing transparency and accountability. Her Excellency addressed concerns regarding financial commitments and procurement processes, emphasizing the SRC's adherence to proper protocols. The SRC's commitment to upholding integrity and serving the student body diligently remains unwavering, despite external scrutiny.

The Caucus Heads (representing Halls, Colleges, and Non-Residential areas) presented reports, emphasizing the achievements and obstacles within their respective groups. The SRC President acknowledged the challenges and provided updates on addressing ongoing issues. Notably, progress has been made in acquiring a plant for the SRC Hostel and resolving WIFI issues.

As the KNUST SRC navigates challenges and strives for progress, the State of the SRC Address serves as a testament to its commitment to student welfare and empowerment. Through proactive measures, innovative solutions, and a dedication to transparency, the SRC continues to champion the interests of the student body. As the university community looks ahead, the SRC remains poised to address challenges, foster collaboration, and uphold its legacy of service and excellence.
