A GROUP OF CONCERNED STUDENTS PETITION THE KNUST 2023/2024 SRC BUDGET OVER ALLEGED CORRUPTION & LACK OF TRANSPARENCY

In recent developments at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a group of concerned students has taken a bold step to address what they perceive as corruption and lack of transparency within the Student Representative Council (SRC) budget for the 2023/2024 fiscal year. In a formal petition addressed to the Director of the Dean of Student Affairs, these students have highlighted several alarming issues that demand immediate attention and action.

The petition, penned by three 2nd-year Economic students, Martin Paul, Dassah Felix, and Nyanli Samali Joseph, sheds light on various discrepancies observed in the SRC budget presentation. Chief among their concerns is the alleged misallocation of funds and lack of clarity regarding budgetary allocations. The students express deep concern over the absence of transparency and accountability in the budgeting process, which they argue undermines the trust and faith of the student body in their leadership.

One of the major grievances outlined in the petition is the vague nature of project allocations, with specific projects lacking clear budgetary allocations. Additionally, the use of percentages without corresponding figures raises questions about the accuracy and accountability of the budgeting process. The students demand that all budget details, including specific allocations and corresponding figures, be made publicly available for scrutiny before approval.

Furthermore, the petition raises questions about the allocation of funds for student welfare initiatives. While a significant portion of the budget is earmarked for student welfare, concerns have been raised regarding the equitable distribution of these funds. Allegations of extravagant spending on non-essential items, such as a GHC 10,000 book purchase and event organization without budget approval, highlight the need for greater accountability and oversight.

In response to these concerns, the students present a list of demands aimed at addressing the alleged corruption and lack of transparency within the SRC budget. They call for a thorough investigation into the allegations, emphasizing the importance of following proper procedures and implementing strict anti-corruption measures. Additionally, they advocate for the establishment of transparent financial reporting systems to prevent future instances of budget mismanagement.

The petition underscores the importance of restoring trust and confidence in student leadership through proactive measures to combat corruption and ensure accountability. It calls upon university authorities to take immediate action in addressing these pressing issues and upholding the integrity of the SRC budgeting process.
