KNUST FEMALE STUDENT BLASTS MALE STUDENTS OVER INAPPROPRIATE SHUTTLE BEHAVIOR

Recently, a female student from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) took to social media to express her deep frustration and discomfort with the inappropriate behaviour she and other female students have been subjected to on university shuttles. In a video, she highlighted a serious issue that demands urgent attention: the inappropriate touching by male students in the crowded shuttle buses.

In her video, the student, clad in black attire, recounted her ordeal on a particularly distressing day. She described how the shuttle, already cramped and suffocating, became even more unbearable due to the inappropriate and unwelcome touches from male passengers. She passionately emphasized that both male and female students pay the same fees and deserve to use the shuttle services without feeling uncomfortable or harassed.

This wasn’t an isolated incident. The student pointed out that such behaviour has been happening repeatedly, causing immense frustration and distress among the female passengers. She questioned why some male students engage in such actions, asking rhetorically if they don’t have girlfriends, and why they would seize any slight opportunity to behave inappropriately.

The student's message was clear: the inappropriate behaviour needs to stop. She stressed that it's not a matter of being unaware of the touches but rather a firm stand against such uncivilized actions. She called on the male students to respect their female counterparts and to understand that such behaviour is not only disrespectful but also makes the affected women feel uncomfortable long after they leave the shuttle, often experiencing phantom sensations of unwelcome touches.

The issue raised by the student touches on broader themes of respect, decency, and the need for a safe and comfortable environment for everyone. Her plea is a reminder that universities are not just places of academic learning but also communities where every individual should feel safe and respected.

Addressing this problem requires a collective effort. The university administration should take steps to ensure the safety and comfort of all students on shuttles, perhaps by increasing the number of operating shuttles and creating awareness about appropriate behaviour, implementing stricter consequences for misconduct, and ensuring that shuttles are not overcrowded. Students, on their part, need to hold each other accountable and foster an environment of mutual respect.
