In the realm of university governance, transparency and accountability are paramount. Recently, concerns were raised at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) regarding the transparency of the Student Representative Council (SRC) budget for the 2023/2024 fiscal year. Allegations of corruption and lack of clarity in budget allocations prompted a group of concerned students to petition the Director of the Dean of Student Affairs, seeking redress for what they perceived as fiscal impropriety.

The petition, dated 19th March 2024, outlined several key grievances. The students highlighted the lack of transparency in budget allocations as a major concern, emphasizing that it eroded trust and hindered proper accountability. They pointed to instances of unclear project allocations, the use of percentages without corresponding figures, and questionable expenditure on programs and initiatives.
One particular contention arose over the alleged purchase of a book titled "History of Ashanti" for GHȻ10,000, which the students claimed was not requested through proper channels. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding delays in providing financial support to needy students, discrepancies in budgetary allocations for college projects, and expenditures on programs before budget approval.
In response to the petition, a meeting was convened between the students and the Director of the Dean of Student Affairs to address the concerns raised. The outcome of this meeting shed light on several critical points.
Firstly, the alleged purchase of the book "History of Ashanti" was refuted by the Dean's office, indicating that no such request was made by the SRC. This revelation debunked one of the central allegations of fiscal mismanagement.
Secondly, regarding financial support for needy students, bureaucratic procedures were cited as the cause for delays. However, assurances were given that efforts would be made to expedite the process and credit the accounts of deserving beneficiaries.
Furthermore, clarification was provided regarding pre-financed programs organized by the SRC, with justification offered for certain expenditures. Additionally, insights were shared regarding the procurement process for the police patrol pick-up, explaining the inflated cost attributed to custom packaging.

While some issues remain unresolved due to potential interference in student affairs management by student leaders, the Director suggested they be addressed through the SRC Parliament amicably.
The meeting between the concerned students and the Director of the Dean of Student Affairs marked a significant step towards transparency and accountability in university governance. While challenges persist, the commitment to addressing concerns and fostering open dialogue bodes well for the future of student leadership at KNUST.
