The National Science and Maths Quiz is not just an academic competition; it's a prestigious event that tests the knowledge and reasoning of some of the brightest young minds in Ghana. The stakes are high, the excitement is palpable, and the results can sometimes lead to impassioned debates. This year, one such debate has been sparked by Prempeh College, who, as true competitors, raised a concern over an answer given in the competition.
A Disappointed Prempeh Supporter |
The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) preliminary and regional stages concluded with their fair share of victories, surprises, and disappointments. The excitement built up as the competition reached the quarterfinals, where the top schools went head-to-head. However, one unexpected twist occurred during the contest between Opoku Ware School, Pope John SHS and Minor Sem, and Prempeh College.

The question in question was a riddle, providing several clues and asking the contestants to identify the scientific principle it described. One would think this was straightforward, but therein lay the controversy. The contestants from Prempeh College responded with "principle of superposition," while the Physics consultant suggested "the principle of (linear) superposition."

The heart of the matter lies in whether these two answers indeed describe the same scientific principle. Prempeh College argues that in the realm of higher-level physics, these terms are widely used interchangeably, reflecting the same fundamental concept.
Prempeh College did not simply make a protest; they supported their case with substantial evidence. They presented documents demonstrating that both "principle of superposition" and "the principle of (linear) superposition" refer to the same principle, a fact acknowledged by reputable physics textbooks, including those used at the university level.

The college's protest letter makes it clear that their intent is not merely to challenge the results but to maintain the confidence and credibility of the NSMQ. They firmly believe that the results should accurately reflect the students' knowledge and the principles they've been taught.

Their call for a thorough review demonstrates their commitment to upholding fairness and accuracy in this prestigious educational competition.
